I’ve Got To Go – The Last Song From The Magic House

Have you ever lived somewhere for 30 years? We nearly made it. Maybe a month or two. The Magic House we call it. It really was a special place. 100 yards from the west side of the lake, facing east into the sunrise. That yard was a lot of work but we enjoyed it in so many ways. Family, friends, foes, highlights lowlights - I could type for days and not get in all the good stories. Peoples' lives were literally changed here. 2020, we're all grown-ups now, seems a good time to go.

From day one I've loved the sound of this room. How I wish I could play you all the music that we played in here. The high ceiling, the wood, the windows looking out on the lake. It is such a creative space. I have friends who call it my sandbox. I had to try one more video on the very last day. We literally put that chair and my guitar in the truck and drove away for the last time. I didn't really take the time to make a real setup. We didn't have the stuff with us. We threw the camera on the tripod and I took two takes to get started and this is what we got. It doesn't sound as good as it did for us. For us it was as I remembered it. Before we filled it full of memories. Before we filled it full of music and laughs and love.

It's older now, the house. It creaks in the wind and the heater's out. It had a fireplace, though, and that worked for the most part.

I nearly lost her here, my love, twice. Once 'cause I was an asshole and once to illness that happened so fast and took us by surprise. We survived that here, at the Magic House, and for that I couldn't be more thankful. Timing is everything I guess...

I wrote this song when we were kinda over it, before the pandemic, when we were starting to spend more time apart. I was getting the house ready for winter and she was playing catch-up at work at our little apartment in the city. So when we were together it was like two teenagers on the phone. You hang up; no you hang up; no you. We would procrastinate and come up with reasons to linger a little or until morning (eyebrow wiggle), Eventually I would leave and, as if we were falling in love all over again, I'd call her as soon as I got home.

I Have To Go

Words and Music by
Dan Grigor

I wish I had a little more time
I would have a little more wine
If only I had a little more time here
I have to go, I have to go

If only I was a little younger
If only I was a lot stronger
If only I had a little more time here
I have to go, I have to go

There's another way to go here
when I leave. If you wanted to
you could go with me

I could stay and make things worse
pretending that none of this hurts
Or I could leave with some self respect
I have to go, I have to go

Off I go, self respect intact
it's just us now on the car ride back
If only I had a little more time here
I have to go, I have to go

There's another way to go here
when I leave. If you wanted to
you could go with me

I have to go, I have to go

There's another way to go here
when I'm gone. I could call you up
as soon as I get home.

I have to go, I have to go
I have to go
I've got to go
