Bobs
I had a Bob day the other day. Bob days count as only one day no matter how many actual days they last. I have a lot of friends named Bob. One in particular I have been friends with for nearly 30 years. Safeway Bob I called him then. He worked there and would cash my check at his store.
Over the years we became fast Friends. We have a lot in common. He is as close to a brother as can be. We played music together over the years and that I treasure. He play some horns and the autoharp. He'll be the first to say not very well. To watch and listen to him play is so much fun. He gets so much joy out of it. His face lights up and his foot gets going and he gets such a kick out of it when we sound good together. I think he plays better than he knows and encourage him whenever I can. I love to play music and I quite delightfully love to play music with my friend, HatBob. His name changed when he started his hat company after his retirement from the store. We enjoyed many years of small town old school Friendship. As it happens life went on. Kids grew up, jobs changed, he divorced, I divorced, I moved and as so often is the case with friends we lost touch. For years. For 15 years.
Follow up:
During that 15 years I moved 3 times, changed my phone number 5 times, had an unlisted number and one day there is a knock on the door and it is Bob. I had moved to the place by the lake and my landlord had a 29 buick for sale in the front yard. Bob was driving by and stopped to ask if he could take a few pictures of the car. He had no idea it would be me opening the door. We sat and talked for hours caught up and got drunk. After that everytime Bob comes to town he stops by here and we take a Bob day. Couch Bob or Hat Bob or Safeway Bob no matter what we call him. Bob day is Bob day. You are not allowed to work for more than 45 minutes in a row on Bob Day and only to finish and or put off whatever you are doing.
One infamous Bobday we were interviewed by a spanish language tv station about the rising flood waters at Lake Elsinore. It was fun and they really mangled my name.
I was just getting ready to start my day when Bob showed up on Tuesday. I never looked back. He brought roast beef sandwiches with him and while i made coffee and woke up a bit, he ran up the hill for beers. Shortly after that my other friend Bob showed up and he decided to join Bob day on the spot. While we sat and laughed and drank Hat Bob brings in some hats for me to try on. He is always looking for cool hats and had gotten himself a handsome bowler. I picked out a new knockabout and we tried one on the new Bob he looked like a Rabbi and blessed us all. We played music and watched the day go by. We argued and debated and laughed and played more music and eventually BobbyD showed up. I had all my Bobs in one place and we laughed some more and even thought BobbyD couldn't stay he took a bit of a BobDay while he could. It is after all more an attitude than anything else.
