Dan Plays with Songwriters At Play at the Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden in the Rain

As part of my mini SLO tour, I was privileged to play at one of Steve Key’s fabulous “Songwriters at Play” showcase concerts in Paso Robles, CA at Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden. What a wonderful thing. Steve is really doing amazing events showcasing the best talent in the area. Part of what he does is make slots available for touring musicians and it was such fun to play there. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Have you ever been to Sculpterra Winery? It is just spectacular. Every year, my friends and I gather in Paso Robles for the “Peacetour.” A silly wine tour gathering created by my friend “Peaceboy” who is famous internationally for his Peacepunch… you drink some and when you sleep you sleep with the peace of an innocent soul. No dreams…  just snores and drool… for hours…  and you wake up… um… refreshed, shall we say.  Yea, that’s it. Refreshed. All day on a limo with a stripper pole and a party mix CD to which we all contribute, and 30 of my favorite people drinking wine in the Paso Robles sunshine. Then back to the ranch for Peacepunch and the reliving of the wandering groves and gardens and laughing and being sillier and sillier as two days of fun goes by. It is delightful and then you sleep for a day. I can’t wait until next year.

Dan Plays "Read to Me" with TootSweet

Here is a clip from around 2am on what would be early July 5th. We are playing what would be the last set of the long weekend of music, fun and fireworks at the 2011 JAM at the CAM. Admittedly a little drunk and quite hoarse from two days of singing over the bands and yelling WOOT a lot, TootSweet and I played a quiet 2am set to 4 backyards full of campfires and sleepy campers.

Fireworks from the 2011 July 4th JAM at the CAM

I’m still recovering from the party but I have been busy pouring over the video and getting some editing done between rehearsals for the Fall PacificNorthWest Tour and negotiating lots of work for IDEA!ography.

Forgive me if it takes awhile to get your videos up. I have way too many irons and not enough fires.

Dan Grigor's Sound Check Sunday July 3rd 2011

A good day. We got pretty much set up. We have some video stuff to do in the morning. We played until 2. After I cleaned up a little and buttoned up the stage, I went down to the lake. I sat there on the end of the new (to us) gangway for my soon-t-be-rescued half underwater dock.

Dark and quiet, the faint sounds of campers settling in, young people around campfires, kids tucked in RVs. The whole neighborhood in bed or getting there.  Hugs and good nights, cars leaving and bit by bit I was left with the sounds of my quiet yard.

Wild kingdom sounds.  Fish jumping, ducks ducking, a night heron in the big tree that is still near the water this year, like they were JAMmin’ too, the sound was great. Quiet. Campfires flickering out, one last BANG from a neighbor down the row.

After that it was like the whole neighborhood sighed, closed their eyes and went to sleep.

Dear Daddy, Here's what I should have said to you, even though it's much too late

For several years in a row I have posted a Father’s Day thread on FARK.com with amazing results, asking simply, “What would you say to your Dad today if you could?”

Reading through the posts, it astounds me how many people took the time to drop in and say their piece, some finding peace.  One after the other, stories came in about how refreshing it was to get clear of a few things.

Be Yourself

The Green Screen Trio’s debut track

Words and Music by Dan Grigor

Be Yourself

Do you see rainbows, or do you see clouds?
Do you get nervous when you’re around crowds?
Do you see moonbeams or the dark of night?
Do you get caught up and lost in your fright?

Don’t be afraid of the dark.
Don’t be afraid of the light.
Just be yourself and you’ll be all right.

Have you ever been somewhere where you didn’t fit in?
You’re drinking scotch and they’re all drinking gin?
Don’t let them fool you, they’re as lost as you are?
I’d rather be different, it’s more fun by far?

Don’t be afraid of the dark.
Don’t be afraid of the light.
Just be yourself and you’ll be all right.

You may feel like you’re not part of my show.
You’re the most important part you know.
Without you we’d be playing to an empty room.
Who’d applaud when this song’s done and that’s very soon.

Don’t be afraid of the dark.
Don’t be afraid of the light.
Just be yourself and you’ll be all right.

You’ll be all right.
Don’t be afraid to be right.
You’ll be all right.
