Dear Daddy... Here's what I should have said. What would you say to your dad if you could?

For five years in a row now I have posted a Father’s Day thread on FARK.com asking simply, “What would you say to your Dad today if you could?”

It has been so cathartic for many and refreshing and heartbreaking to read the comments. People. They are amazing and wonderful and ridiculous and stupid and bright and are supportive or trolls. It truly takes all kinds.

People came to the threads and posted things they had been holding in for years.

Thousands of views later and I have a stack of email and the comments in those threads to help me understand that this is still a good idea. People need to say some stuff and just let it go. Just get it off your chest.  A weight lifted.
So here we go again. Not only am I posting the thread and asking the question but at some point today I’ll find a spot and take a moment and tell my Dad that I forgive him and I love him and this year I’ve gotten to the point where I miss him. I wish he could see his great grandkids and I wish the he could play music with me down by the lake.

The Lyrics

Dear Daddy
words and music by Dan Grigor

Here’s what I should have said to you
Even though it’s much too late
It’s what I should have said but didn’t
I was blinded by false hate
Everybody missed you, when you ran away
And I understand now, why you couldn’t stay
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right

Then when I saw you, after all those years
You said my hair’s too long, and you kissed my ears
I tried to call you Daddy, but it had been too long
The words sound so strange now, that you’re forever gone
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right

And now it’s my turn, I’m gonna be a Dad
That would have made you Grandpa,
and I wonder what you would have said
Would you’ve been happy or would you’ve been sad
Would it have brought back bad memories you had
You tried to pacify us with all your dreams
You had some good ones, some of the best I’ve seen
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right

So rest easy Daddy, you’ve been through a lot
Now all that’s left are the memories we’ve got
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
